JOHOR BAHRU: Johor is once again stepping into the global spotlight with a series of major investments worth RM12 billion (S$3.66 billion), set to transform the state’s economy and create thousands of high-value jobs for Malaysians.
The announcements, shared by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz in a translated Facebook post, signal Johor’s growing role as a hub for advanced industries and sustainable development.
Leading the investment wave is a RM10 billion green artificial intelligence (AI) data centre in Kulai, a collaboration between YTL and US tech giant NVIDIA.
Far more than a traditional data hub, the centre is designed to serve as Malaysia’s “AI brain” for the future, equipped with renewable energy-powered infrastructure. This positions Johor as a serious global contender in the rapidly expanding AI sector.
Adding to the momentum, US-based Colorcon has chosen Johor for its largest factory worldwide, a RM262 million specialty excipient plant.
Approved in early 2023 and now preparing for construction, the facility underscores Johor’s rising status in advanced manufacturing. Importantly, over 33% of its jobs will pay above RM5,000 monthly, providing tangible income growth for local families and aligning with Johor’s vision of becoming a high-income state.
Completing the trio of projects is the RM2 billion MBW Innexus Industrial City in Pasir Gudang. Far more than a conventional industrial park, it is designed as a next-generation hub that could generate 37,000 new jobs, while reinforcing Johor’s commitment to attracting high-tech industries and uplifting local communities.
“Insya-Allah, MITI will continue to support initiatives to advance Johor’s development,” wrote Tengku Zafrul, framing these projects as part of a broader national mission to secure Malaysia’s sustainable, high-tech future.
The announcements quickly sparked online excitement, with Malaysians praising Johor’s rapid rise.
“Impressive to see Colorcon choose Malaysia as its hub, especially in Johor,” wrote one netizen, while others expressed pride and optimism. Some comments highlighted Johor’s geographic advantage as Singapore’s neighbour, a key factor in attracting global investors.
Though anchored in Johor, these projects will also have a regional impact.
