Malaysia boasts a robust liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure, encompassing production, storage, and regasification facilities. The most prominent LNG production and storage facilities are situated in Bintulu, Sarawak, and Pengerang, Johor.

Bintulu, Sarawak:

The Malaysia LNG (MLNG) complex in Bintulu is one of the world’s largest LNG facilities, comprising four production units:

  • MLNG Satu: Established in 1978, it operates three trains with a capacity of 2.7 million tons per annum (Mtpa) each.
  • MLNG Dua: Incorporated in 1992, it manages three trains with a capacity of 2.6 Mtpa each.
  • MLNG Tiga: Founded in 1995, it oversees two trains with a capacity of 3.6 Mtpa each.
  • Train 9: Launched in 2012, it adds an additional 3.6 Mtpa to the complex’s capacity.

Collectively, these units provide a total annual capacity of 29.3 million metric tons. The facility also features seven LNG storage tanks with a combined capacity of 445,000 cubic meters.

Pengerang, Johor:

In Johor’s Pengerang area, the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PIPC) houses the Petronas LNG Regasification Terminal Pengerang (RGTP). This terminal is equipped with a Floating Storage Unit (FSU) to facilitate LNG storage and regasification. In November 2023, MISC Berhad entered into a Heads of Agreement with Pengerang LNG (Two) Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary of Petronas Gas Berhad, for the supply, operation, and maintenance of an LNG FSU at the RGTP.

Port Klang, Selangor:

Additionally, in Port Klang, Global Energy Storage operates a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) storage facility. Commercial operations commenced in May 2022, making it the first independent refrigerated LPG terminal in Southeast Asia. The terminal has a capacity of 134,400 cubic meters, comprising two refrigerated tanks and four pressurized bullets.

Johor, Malaysia, hosts several specialized facilities for the storage and handling of liquefied oils, including edible oils and petroleum products. Notable among these are:

  • Johor Port: Located in Pasir Gudang, Johor Port is renowned as the world’s largest palm oil terminal. It features specialized facilities for liquid bulk cargo, including edible oils and petroleum products. The port is equipped with marine loading arms for efficient and safe operations, and its terminal tank farm has a capacity of nearly 1 million metric tons.
  • Tanjung Langsat Industrial Complex (TLIC): Situated southeast of Johor Bahru, TLIC is a dedicated industrial area for petrochemical and chemical industries. The port within TLIC has specialized facilities for handling liquid bulk cargo, such as oil, chemicals, and petroleum products. It includes a liquid cargo terminal with deep-sea berths capable of accommodating medium-range tankers
  • Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PIPC): Located in the Kota Tinggi District, PIPC is Malaysia’s largest petrochemical complex, covering approximately 80 km². It houses oil refineries, naphtha crackers, petrochemical plants, LNG terminals, and a regasification plant. The Pengerang Deepwater Terminal, part of PIPC, offers centralized storage facilities for trading, refining, and petrochemical industries, with a storage capacity of 5 million cubic meters.
  • Tanjung Langsat Port: Also located in Pasir Gudang, Tanjung Langsat Port specializes in handling bulk cargo, including liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and hazardous chemicals. It features a liquid cargo terminal with facilities capable of accommodating various tanker sizes.

These facilities collectively position Johor as a key hub for the storage and handling of liquefied oils, serving both regional and global markets.
